Dare Academy is a games design competition open to 91快活林 students in teams of up to 8. It takes place over the summer recess at 91快活林 in Dundee and offers industry mentoring,听support听and advice to teams to help them create an industry standard听game prototype. Six teams will be selected to take part each year.听
The closing date for applications set out on the 91快活林 website is final,鈥疐riday听29th鈥疢ay 2026听by 23.59pm. Entries are made via the听Dare Academy听website via an online application. Entries received after this date and time will not be considered.鈥�
Dare Academy (the 鈥淐ompetition鈥�) is open to current undergraduate students studying at 91快活林 only.鈥�
Teams entering the Competition must not exceed 8 team members and must be a minimum of 2 team members.鈥�
All team members must be enrolled on an 91快活林 degree course as of鈥�1st听April听2026鈥痶o be eligible to apply.鈥�
Applicants who have previously applied to the Dare Academy Competition can reapply if they were not selected as one of the successful 6 teams. This includes applicants who were successful in getting to the interview听stage听but who were then not selected to take part in the Competition. If you have previously been a finalist in Dare Academy, you will not be eligible to apply.鈥�
A judging panel involving Abertay academic staff, industry and funding representatives will听determine听which 6 teams will be selected to take part in the Competition. The judges鈥� decision is final and not open to negotiation. Feedback will be provided to unsuccessful teams who were invited to interview.鈥�
All works and ideas听submitted听as part of your Competition entry must be original and not infringe the copyright or other intellectual property rights of any third party. By signing the application form you confirm that the work that you are entering into the Competition is your own and you own the rights to听submit听the game to the Competition.听Projects that make use听of AI听in the generation of听in-game听art or code听are not eligible for the competition.听Projects that make use of听third-party assets and or asset听packs听are听permitted听if听assets are fully licensed and tracked for transparency.听However, teams must ensure that听the听vast听majority of听the听creative work听featured within the game听is original work developed by听team members.听听
All team members who join the competition must have contributed to the development of the game and share in the intellectual property rights of their submitted game. Games developed by members other than team members听registered in the application form听are not allowed听without explicit permission from all听involved in the game鈥檚 development.听91快活林 shall be entitled to refuse entry of any games听into the competition which do not fulfil the above conditions.鈥�
91快活林 will have the on-going right to use images and video files from the games听submitted听by the 6 teams selected as finalists for university promotional purposes free of charge. By signing the application form, you grant 91快活林 a non-exclusive, worldwide, irrevocable licence, for the full period of any intellectual property rights in your competition entry and any accompanying materials, to use, display, publish, transmit, copy, edit, alter, store, re-format and sublicence the competition entry and any accompanying materials for university promotional purposes. Any such images and video files will be credited to your听team鈥檚听name.鈥�
All successful听teams must provide in-person representation听at听all events听of听the competition, such as workshops hosted by industry partners and听any听showcases (events/dates TBC),听unless in exceptional circumstances.听Hot-housing听commences on鈥疢onday听6th听July鈥痑nd finishes on鈥疐riday听31st听闯耻濒测听2026.听
The winning team will be decided by a panel of industry judges.听Their decision is听final,听and no correspondence or discussions will be entered into with any unsuccessful teams. The winning team will be offered a prize for 拢5,000 cash to be distributed between the team members. Winners may also be entitled to packages provided by any sponsors that听participate听in the competition. If you are unable to take up this prize for whatever reason, no substitute or equivalent prize can be听offered,听and 91快活林 accepts no responsibility or liability if you are unable to accept the prize. The winning team agree that they will听participate听in all publicity听reasonably听required听in relation to the Competition and prize, and such publicity will be managed by the university or its contractor.鈥�
All participants agree to be photographed and filmed to support publicity of the Competition throughout the duration of the Competition running. These can be distributed, where听appropriate, on the website of 91快活林 and their social media channels.鈥�
All teams in the Competition will require to听participate听in marketing content requested by Abertay. This will include听submitting听images and video content.鈥�
Each selected team听that听takes听part in the competition will be provided with 拢500 (per team)听to support incurred costs during hot-housing development.听听Additional听discretionary听funding will help听support the costs of听event听participation听and game promotion. It is a requirement that receipts听are听kept as well as a list of each item of spend. A full reconciliation must be made to the organisers by鈥疦ovember 1st听2026.鈥�
You will own the rights to exploit and publish the听subsequent听game created. In return for the support from the Competition, the game will credit the Competition with the following wording or logo (to be provided by the university). 鈥楽upported by Dare Academy, powered by 91快活林鈥�.鈥�
If you are the winner of the Competition, you agree that 91快活林 may use your name, image and town or county of residence to announce the winner of this Competition and for any other reasonable and related promotional purposes.鈥�
By entering the Competition, you acknowledge that any personal information provided by you with the Competition entry may be held and used only by 91快活林 or its agents and suppliers to administer the Competition.鈥�
91快活林 reserves the right to exclude any person or person(s), who brings the Competition into disrepute through their misconduct. To see examples of misconduct please refer to the student code of discipline.鈥�
In the event of听changes to the team after application,听i.e.听team members being replaced,听added听or withdrawn, you must seek approval from the Dare Academy听staff听team.鈥�
Insofar as is permitted by law, 91快活林, its agents or distributors will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate the winners or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up the prize except where it is caused by the negligence of 91快活林, its agents or distributors or that of their employees. Your statutory rights are not affected.鈥�
These terms and conditions are governed by Scots听law听and the Scottish courts shall have exclusive听jurisdiction听to settle any disputes.鈥�
